CHANGE YOUR FOOD HABIT THE AYURVEDIC WAY

Skipping
breakfast
The first
meal of your day that will power you throughout the day. As the saying goes “BREAKFAST EAT LIKE A KING”, it is a
must to have a healthy and full breakfast. The reason behind this is, the
digestive acid secreted from the night before will be able to digest a heavy
breakfast. When we skip breakfast the acid leads to hyper acidity which in the
long run may lead to gastric ulcer. So it’s advisable to have your breakfast by
9am at the least. Ayurveda acharyas say
that skipping the main meal may lead to disorders of vata and pitta which gives rise to more than
120 different types of disease. It has become form of lifestyle itself to power
yourself through coffee. Coffee increases pitta (acidity) in the body if you haven’t
taken your breakfast it’s like fueling the already blazing fire.
Drinking
water in empty stomach
Drinking
half or one glass water is advised and that too in lukewarm condition. Some
drink more than one litre of water. When you do that the acid that has been secreted
in the stomach all through the night becomes neutralized or it
just gets flushed down through the intestines. Our stomach has a special mucosal coating
to prevent the acid causing corrosion on the internal surface. But our
intestine lacks it. The other reason is that, when you take your breakfast it doesn’t get digested properly due to the lack of acid. This leads to nausea, lack of appetite, aversion towards food, tiredness, lack of concentration etc. some have satisfactory bowel movements only after drinking water in empty stomach if so try drinking minimal quantity. Ayurveda explains in The DRAVADRAVYA VIJNANIYAM chapter the effects of drinking water. it says that” the person will be normal if he drinks water in-between his meals, he will be stout if he drinks water at the end of his meal and he will be emaciated if he drinks water during the commencement of the meal”
The quality
of honey is that it’s good for the eyes, it can be used in ailments like
hiccup, and diabetes, skin disorders, cough, diarrhea and wounds too. But honey
kills if used after heating it and by those suffering from great heat, used
during hot season, hot country or with hot foods (Astanga Hridayam
sutra stanam chp 5). This may be a shock as many would have taken honey
with warm water in empty stomach to reduce weight, or tried some honey glazed
foods too. Well it’s time to stop.
Heavy
dinner
Try avoiding
heavy dinner. It’s better to have a very light
dinner at least 2 hours before your bed time. The body goes to rest at
night so it’s difficult to digest a heavy meal. More over when you lie down to
sleep if you have had a heavy dinner it would regurgitate i.e. come back to
your food pipe or to your mouth leading to difficulty in sleep and heart burn. Heavy
dinner leads to weight gain too.
