INSOMNIA/ SLEEPLESSNESS



Insomnia is "DIFFICULTY IN INITIATING OR MAINTAINING SLEEP", it is a symptom not a stand alone disease.

TYPES OF INSOMNIA
Short term insomnia:(one to three weeks)
  • jet lag
  • shift work
  • stress
  • illness or hospitalization
  • withdrawal from drugs, alcohol or smoking
Long term insomnia:(symptoms lasting more than 3 weeks)

Ayurveda considers sleep as one of the 3 pillars of the body.  A person of kapha prakriti (body constitution) sleeps more,pitta prakriti and vata prakriti sleeps comparatively  less. 

The samhithas detail several diseases caused by suppressing sleep, sleeping during day time and also staying awake at night, such as
  • delusions,laziness
  • heaviness of head and eyes
  • pain all over the body
  • digestive disorder therefore leading to many other diseases

Helpful ways to prevent insomnia
  • regular gentle massage of body and taking warm bath before going to bed
  • avoid tea or coffee especially at night
  • listening to pleasant music
  • creating clean and neat bedroom atmosphere
  • early dinner
  • intake warm milk at night
